Nashville Children's Theater

Exposing children to a variety of activities such as sports, arts, and literature is one of the keys to having well-rounded kids. In a city with so much music and art, it can still be difficult to find kid-appropriate shows and music. One of the easiest, and most fun, ways to expose your children to the arts in Nashville is the Nashville Children’s Theatre!

The Nashville Children’s Theatre (NCT) was established in 1931 with the mission of “[nurturing] the next generation of global citizens by providing transformational theatrical experiences which reflect our evolving community, instill profound empathy, and foster personal discovery.” Each season since then the NCT has put on engaging shows and fostered a love of theatre in children across Nashville.

There are many reasons to love the Nashville Children’s Theatre, but here are a few of our favorites.

Sensory, Anxiety, and Language Warnings

As a parent, you want to know that you won’t be exposing your children to anything that isn’t age-appropriate. The Nashville Children’s Theatre goes to great lengths to ensure that you’ll feel comfortable bringing your child to a show by providing sensory, anxiety, language, and violence/scariness warnings about each show they produce. The warnings are rated one to five in each category, and there are also additional show notes for further context. The NCT also lists the themes for social and emotional learning for each show.

Comfort Room

Going to the theatre is an exciting activity, but it can be overwhelming for some little ones. The NCT has a Comfort Room at the back of the auditorium where you can take a break during a performance if your child is anxious, restless, or upset.

Accessibility and Inclusivity

The NCT strives to make its performances and facilities accessible and inclusive to all. In addition to physical accessibility, the NCT also provides:

  • ASL sign-interpreted performances
  • Sensory-friendly performances
  • Assistive Listening Devices
  • Courtesy Wheelchair
  • Alternate Format Programs

For more details about inclusivity at the Nashville Children’s Theatre, visit their website.

Tickets for adults are $23, and children’s tickets are $17. Children two and under do not need a purchased ticket. The NCT also offers financial assistance for eligible families.

If your kids have an interest in theatre and want to take classes, the NCT has their own drama school that you can enroll your children in. It’s open to ages 4 – 18, and offers a variety of times for classes including Saturday mornings, after school, Spring Break, and summer camps. The NCT drama school also offers financial aid to those eligible.
